Personal project diary 4.

On sunday (29/10/15) I went to the red house with another member of my group to the red house in bexleyheath. Unfortunately our actors cancelled so we were unable to film any footage. We have aranged to film in the green room on the 1st and 2nd of November.

I am now beginning to work on making the magazine.

I believe that with the work I have currently completed I am at an e/u grade.

Real media text essay (exam).

In AS my brief was to create a music magazine font page, double page spread, and contents page. In order to do this I had to stick by conventions. In terms of layout I stuck by conventions for the layout of text, images etc. For the images and text I had to put them in certain places such as putting the main headline as the top of the page, having the sub-text placed around the image, which was placed in the centre of the page. In order to do this I had to use the text tool and then used the magic wand tool to place the main image over the main headline. The main reason for doing this was because I was just getting used to using conventions so for most of the text and images I used across the magazine I wasn't able to develop of challenge most of the conventions. When I got to A2 my brief was to create a horror trailer. In order to make the trailer we had to make a narrative structure. This included the three main parts of a trailer the equilibrium, disruption, and the resolution. Whilst working with the group we were able to develop the storyline, which created the narrative structure. Now that I had more experience with the conventions I was able to challenge them. In order to make sure that we didn't ruin the film in the trailer we only had an equilibrium and disruption and had no resolution.

During AS before taking the photos I had to make sure that I had the right mise-en-scene in terms of costume and make-up which would follow the typical conventions, which would make my magazine stand out as a pop magazine. When it came to getting the costume and make-up I asked the model to wear there own clothes and to dress in a casual outfit. The main reason for this was that I didn't have a budget to buy and costume of make-up. In A2 as my brief was for a horror trailer I had to change the costume and make-up required due to the mise-en-sence conventions of a supernatural costume. Instead of getting the actors in the trailer getting the costume I had to get it myself. I went to a local costume shop and was able to buy a long white gown, fake blood etc. that we were able to use in the photos and the trailer. The main reason for doing this was in order to make sure that we followed the conventions of out sub-genre to make sure it looked like a supernatural trailer.

Furthermore, whilst doing the photoshoot I used equipment such as a camera and lighting. I took the photos in front of a green screen and used the camera and lighting equipment for all of the shots. For the main image of the front page I had to stick to the conventions and take a medium close-up.
----------30 minutes----------
In A2 me and my group use the camera equipment, the lighting in the green room, and LED lighting. Instead of just using the green room we also used other locations such as a foot tunnel and a public house. The main reason for this was so that we were able to develop our camera work by filming in more than one type of camera shot and angle.

Research and planning essay (exam).

Across both year twelve and thirteen I had to complete research and also do planning before completing the making of the music magazine and film trailer, which I completed using different digital technologies.

Firstly, in year twelve for the music magazine I had to create a mood-board in order to plan what sort of images, colours etc. I would be using for the front cover, contents page, and double page spread. For this I decided to use powerpoint in order to put all of the images and text together. For the text I used the text box tool box so I could place the text at a certain angle to make sure that none of the text overlapped the images. The reason for creating this mood-board is to the I was able to get influences for my music magazine so that I could get ideas for the layout of the images and text, and also what colour scheme would best suit the layout. In year thirteen I had to complete mood-boards for all sub-genres of horror. The way I did this was by using thing link. This allowed me to create an interactive mood-board. I used one image for the background and then added in text around the image. The main tool allowed me to put small circle over the background which contained the text and images. This meant that I didn't have to put lots of text and images into one small space. The main reason for doing this is so that i could discover the main conventions of each of the sub-genres which would help to inspire some of the ideas for our final horror trailer.

Secondly, during part of the research for my music magazine I had to look at existing pop magazines in order to get some inspiration. In order to do this i looked online at several existing music magazines and I also went and bought a couple of magazines from a shop. The main reason for this was so that I could get some influences for my magazine by looking at the similarities between existing pop magazines such as there layout and colour scheme. During the research for the horror trailer I completed three crit sheets containing information about films for my trailer. Instead of using the internet for this part I watched them on CD and on Sky movies. For each one I had to write certain information about each of the films such ad the theme, stock characters, the equilibrium etc. The main reason for doing this is so that similarly for my music magazine I could compare films of the same sub-genre to see there similarities and differences.

Furthermore, at the start of year twelve for the preliminary task I had to reconstruct a movie magazine. During this task I used photoshop. I used tools such as the text tool and the magic wand tool. The main reason for this task was so that I could get some experience using photoshop so that I can be prepared for making the music magazine. In year thirteen I had to create a poster for my horror trailer. Again I used photoshop to create it but I used more tools. I was able to use tools such as the brightness contrast and the gradient in order to change the overall look of the poster. The main reason for doing this was so that I was able to get a good idea of what I would have on my final poster.

5.1 Audience 30 minute timed exam question.

For this essay I have used the trailer for insidious in order to see how the audience reacts to the trailer.

Firstly, for the trailer we can apply the hypodermic needle theory. The hypodermic needle theory is the way in which the mass media injects thoughts, values, and beliefs into the audience, which can almost be done through some form of propaganda.. We can see that the subtext of the film is child abuse. If the audience sees the film from the passive perspective of the hypodermic needle theory then they may see how from what they've been taught from the mass media that child abuse is bad and then act upon this by acting upon what they saw.

Secondly, we can also apply the uses and gratifications theory to the trailer. The first way in which the theory can be applied to the trailer is in the way that people watch the film for there own needs. Part of the active theory suggests that the audience watches the film for there own needs such as to get an adrenaline rush. The main reason for this is that what happens in the film rarely happens in real life so people have to watch films in order to try and experience the situation for themselves. This links to the part of the theory that people will watch these types of films when there bored so that they can try to add more excitement into there lives. Also, after watching a film some people will head straight onto a social networking site in order to express there opinions about the film. Then they may decided to become more active and go onto a fan group or chat to there friends about the film. The main reason why people do this is to become part of a large group of people who all experienced the same feelings and share similar thoughts on the film.

Furthermore, we could also apply the copycat theory to the trailer.
----30 minutes----
The way in which the theory takes over a passive audience. For example, in insidious we see the way in which they try to summon the demon. People may act upon this in two different ways. One way is by saying that it's impossible to summon a spirit by taking the more scientific approach. However, some people may take a different approach and try to contact a spirit themselves by using a Ouija board.

Trailer timeline

In this task I had to create a timeline showing how far into the trailer each scene would take place and how long they would be on screen. This task is part of the pre-production tasks.

Personal project diary 2.

I started work on the tasks for the pre-production on 06/10/15. I have completed the scene walk through map for the trailer which depicts what will be shown during the trailer. I still have to complete the storyboards and then turn the storyboard into an animatic.

4.1 Representation 30 minute timed essay answer.

In the trailer for insidious we can see how different people have been represented in different ways.

Firstly, we can see how Clovers theory of post-feminism and misogynist are presented through the trailer. Post-feminism is represented as both the male and female characters get a roughly equal share of scenes in the trailer as most of the time there together and also have an equal amount of solo scenes. However, we can also see misogynistic values represented through the male characters. The main way this is done is by having the main male character as the most powerful character. This is also done by them having the demon as a male who is trying to mostly target the woman. We can also see this as they have decided to make there child a boy. This represents misogynistic values by having the mum outnumbered by males.

Secondly, we also see how the other is represented in the trailer. Even though we don't see too much of a physical aspect of the demon we start to understand through the trailer how he's different, such as when we see the rather large blooded hand print of the sons bed sheet. We can also see this in the trailer when the shadowy figure of the demon is seen in the corner of the sons bedroom with rather long arms.

Furthermore, we see the representation between good and evil constantly throughout the trailer. We see how the main male and female characters are both trying to fight against the demon that has possessed there son, even though they don't realise it at first. (30 minute mark). We can see how the demon starts to win the battle of good versus evil as the protagonist have to bring in more people in order to help them find out how to bring there son back.

Finally, we can also see how Charles Derry's theory of hauntings and demonic possessions presented throughout the trailer. The main way his theory is presented is through the protagonists. Throughout the trailer we see how they are confused and scared about what's happening in there house. By doing this it plays on the audiences fear of the unknown and by showing them how evil exists in the world. By making the possession and haunting as realistic as possible it makes the audience think about if it could actually happen to them.

Personal project diary 1.

Since last lesson (27/09/15) I have been able to complete a good amount of work. I have completed task 1 in which I made a mood board for each of the different sub-genres of horror. I also completed task 2 in which I made another mood board showing general semiotics which are presented in horror films. I also completed a prezi presentation on the stock characters in a supernatural/psychological film. I also created another prezi in which I went through the typical scenes in a in a supernatural/psychological film. I also created a mood board in which I went through the mise-en-scene used in a supernatural/psychological film. I am still yet to complete tasks 10 and 11 which will be done by Friday (01/10/15). Task 5,7,8, and 9 I will completing in the next few weeks in workshops.

3.2 question 1b-Narrative

For the trailer for 28 days later I believe that Todorov's narrative theory doesn't hardly applies to the trailer. Firstly,at the start the pace is rather fast as the editing is very quick as it goes through the different days. This goes against Todorov's theory as he stated that the start is rather calm during the equilibrium stage. Instead the equilibrium stage comes more towards the middle of the trailer when the protagonist wakes up in the hospital and discovers London to be adbandoned. A way in which it does apply to the trailer is that it has the disruption towards the end of the trailer. We can see this as the trailer becomes much more fast paced through the editing and we start to see more of the zombies. Also, we don't see the restoration stage when the characters escape during the trailer. The main reason for this is that they don't want to ruin the film before the target audience has even seen it. So really it's not possible for the trailer to completely follow Todorov's theory. I also believe that the trailer applies to Kate Domailles theory. Kate Domailles theory states that any film can be put into at least one of eight narrative types. One of these narrative types i believe that trailer fits into is 'circe'. Circe is the idea of there being a chase between the hero and villain and a battle between good and bad. This is shown in the 28 days later trailer as there is a battle between the good, the group of people, and bad, the zombies. During the film there are battles between these two groups as the protagonist try to survive whilst the antagonist try to hunt them down. Furthermore, I deliver that Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposites. One of the binary opposites the trailer follows is between civilised and savage. During the film we see how the group of people are civilised as they try to work together in order to survive, whereas the zombies act in a savage way by trying to hunt down and kill the protagonists. Another binary opposite it follows is good vs evil. During the trailer we see how the protagonists, the good guys, have to try to fight back against the zombies, the bad guys, in order to survive and try to get rescued.

2.3 Genre question 1b prep

For my media production I am going to write about the trailer 28 days later. Of course for this trailer I will be writing about the horror genre. By doing horror I will only be able to use certain conventions that fit into that genre. In 1980 theorist Steve Neal said that 'genre are instances or repetition and difference'. He also said 'mere repetition would not attract an audience'. In 28 days later trailer we can see how they repeated the new convention of how the zombie outbreak was caused by a science experiment.  Another generic feature that they did change is having it based in London, a major city, rather than having it in the middle of no where near to a graveyard. By doing this it shows the audience how these things can also happen in major cities and not just in the countryside. One major difference they made is by basing most of the zombie attacks at night. By doing this is gives the audience the impression that the zombies are acting like vampires. By doing this the director was abel to bring in two sub-genres in order to create a hybrid. Of course being within the zombie sub-genere the director went with the generic idea that the virus would be spared by people being bit. Agin this shows how he was able to bring in a convention from the vampire sub-genre to show how they have create a hybrid.
In order for the director to show that the film is in the horror genre he had to use certain editing techniques. One editing technique they used was using close ups on the zombies so that the audience were able to clearly see what they look like, such as there red eyes. By the director get the zombies to have red eyes it shows the audience that as soon as someone becomes a zombie they are almost possessed by the virus by showing how all of there body has been taken over by the virus. This represents Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposites. This is mostly down through showing how humans and zombies and act in different ways. In the trailer we see how the zombies are acting in an animalistic and violent way. We see this when the zombie breaks a window and starts to immediately attack those within the house. This also helps to reinforce Kim Paffenroths theory of how when people become a zombie they lose there personal identity. This is shown in most zombie films such as 28 days later as all of the zombies act in the same was as the virus has taken over there body and by doing so has almost erased that persons characteristics that make them different from everyone else.

Virus T poster

The image above shows the practice version for my horror poster. I have used the words "no" and "safe" in the tagline to try and represent fear to the audience. I have used the colour red in order to represent blood which is seen through the film. I have also made sure that I use generic teen zombies instead of just generic zombies in order to show the audience that the film revolves around teenagers.

Trailer timeline research.

In this task I had to find when certain things happen during a horror trailer. This include when titles come up, when the production company is shown, when the pace increases etc.
For mine I looked at the first official trailer for 'The Cabin in the Woods'.

2.1 Homework

For this task I had to look at several films and do research into the target audience for that film. I have taken screenshots of a couple of user reviews, the user ratings for each of the films, and then concluded why they got that target audience.

1.Antichrist

User reviews

User rating

Target audience:Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating:6.7
Conclusion: This film appealed to this target audience due to the film have a lot of gore which appeals more to a male audience. Also most of the overall people who watched it were males which could have been due to it having some sexual scenes. Finally, the film also contains  a strong male character, which some of the target audience may have been able to relate to.

2. 28 Weeks Later

Target audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 7.1
Conclusion: As you can see from the user ratings the majority of people who saw the film were males who tend to be the bigger fans of zombie films than females. The target audience for this film was also rather young which could be down due to the amount of gore in the film which normally isn't popular with very young and older people.

3.American Psycho

Target Audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 7.8
Conclusion: The film contains actor Christian Bale who is mentioned in one of the user reviews above who was credited for giving a "performance of a lifetime". This played a major role in targeting males aged 18-29 as he has been in films such as the Dark Knight trilogy which has a similar target audience.

4.The Devil's Backbone

Target audience: Males aged 30-44
Target audience rating: 7.4
Conclusion: From the user review screenshot for this film you can see that the title of the review contains the word "bloody". This shows why this film has a target audience of males aged 30-44 because most males this age are use to seeing scenes with a lot of blood in them. This could also be down to there being being two male characters, a young boy and an adult. Due to them being the main characters the target audience may in some way be able to relate to them.

5. The Mist

Target audience: Males aged 18-29.
Target audience rating: 7.3
Conclusion: Monster films normally have a similar target audience to this film. The film had a large audience as the novel of the film was by famous author Stephen King who has a large fan base. Similar to all the other films above this one also contains scenes of gore, which again normally attract a male audience.

6. Wolf Creek

Target audience: Males aged 30-44
Target audience rating: 6.3
Conclusion: This film, like the Devils Backbone, has the same target audience and it is practically for the same reasons. This film also has scenes with a 'gore'. However, I was rather surprised that there wasn't a bigger female audience as two of the main characters a females and only one is a male.

7. The Cabin in the Woods.

Target audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 7.2
Conclusion: The target audience that the film has doesn't really surprise me as the film contains scenes with 'gore'. Three of the four characters are males so the target audience may be able to relate to at least one of them. However, similar to Wolf Creek, the film contains a strong female character so was surprised that the female audience wasn't a bit larger.

8. Shaun of the dead.

Target audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 8.0
Conclusion: This film combines the genres of horror and comedy. This film, like most above, have lots of violence and lots of gore. The actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been in films with a very similar target audience so fans of the two actors would be part of the target audience.

From the eight films above you can see a clear pattern. All of the films above are targeted to males audiences of 18-29 and 30-44. Practically all of the films above contain at least one male character who the audience may be able to relate to. Also, most of the films above contain some form of 'gore'. Most films containing gore are targeted at males at a young or middle age as females, young males, and older males are not normally associated with films containing gore. This is shown in films such as 'Wolf Creek' that contains gore and has two strong females character, and yet the target audience is still males aged 30-44.

Overall, most horror film makers are making there films for the same audience due to males aged 18-44 being the biggest fans of horror films. This may however be a bad thing because if all horror film makers target the same audience then films may start to become repetitive.

1.1 Homework

In this tasks I had to make several interactive videos for each of the 8 sub-genres of horror. For each I added in labels which identify if the trailer for the film includes any of the 12 icons of horror and what they have been used to do.

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street - Slasher

2. The Village - Thriller

3.One Missed Call - Japanese horror

4.Zombieland - Zombie

5.Godzilla - Monster

6.Daybreakers - Vampire/Werewolf.

7.Poltergeist - Supernatural/Psychological

8. The Human Centipede - Splasher (Extreme)
