Trailer timeline research.

In this task I had to find when certain things happen during a horror trailer. This include when titles come up, when the production company is shown, when the pace increases etc.
For mine I looked at the first official trailer for 'The Cabin in the Woods'.

2.1 Homework

For this task I had to look at several films and do research into the target audience for that film. I have taken screenshots of a couple of user reviews, the user ratings for each of the films, and then concluded why they got that target audience.

1.Antichrist

User reviews

User rating

Target audience:Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating:6.7
Conclusion: This film appealed to this target audience due to the film have a lot of gore which appeals more to a male audience. Also most of the overall people who watched it were males which could have been due to it having some sexual scenes. Finally, the film also contains  a strong male character, which some of the target audience may have been able to relate to.

2. 28 Weeks Later

Target audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 7.1
Conclusion: As you can see from the user ratings the majority of people who saw the film were males who tend to be the bigger fans of zombie films than females. The target audience for this film was also rather young which could be down due to the amount of gore in the film which normally isn't popular with very young and older people.

3.American Psycho

Target Audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 7.8
Conclusion: The film contains actor Christian Bale who is mentioned in one of the user reviews above who was credited for giving a "performance of a lifetime". This played a major role in targeting males aged 18-29 as he has been in films such as the Dark Knight trilogy which has a similar target audience.

4.The Devil's Backbone

Target audience: Males aged 30-44
Target audience rating: 7.4
Conclusion: From the user review screenshot for this film you can see that the title of the review contains the word "bloody". This shows why this film has a target audience of males aged 30-44 because most males this age are use to seeing scenes with a lot of blood in them. This could also be down to there being being two male characters, a young boy and an adult. Due to them being the main characters the target audience may in some way be able to relate to them.

5. The Mist

Target audience: Males aged 18-29.
Target audience rating: 7.3
Conclusion: Monster films normally have a similar target audience to this film. The film had a large audience as the novel of the film was by famous author Stephen King who has a large fan base. Similar to all the other films above this one also contains scenes of gore, which again normally attract a male audience.

6. Wolf Creek

Target audience: Males aged 30-44
Target audience rating: 6.3
Conclusion: This film, like the Devils Backbone, has the same target audience and it is practically for the same reasons. This film also has scenes with a 'gore'. However, I was rather surprised that there wasn't a bigger female audience as two of the main characters a females and only one is a male.

7. The Cabin in the Woods.

Target audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 7.2
Conclusion: The target audience that the film has doesn't really surprise me as the film contains scenes with 'gore'. Three of the four characters are males so the target audience may be able to relate to at least one of them. However, similar to Wolf Creek, the film contains a strong female character so was surprised that the female audience wasn't a bit larger.

8. Shaun of the dead.

Target audience: Males aged 18-29
Target audience rating: 8.0
Conclusion: This film combines the genres of horror and comedy. This film, like most above, have lots of violence and lots of gore. The actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been in films with a very similar target audience so fans of the two actors would be part of the target audience.

From the eight films above you can see a clear pattern. All of the films above are targeted to males audiences of 18-29 and 30-44. Practically all of the films above contain at least one male character who the audience may be able to relate to. Also, most of the films above contain some form of 'gore'. Most films containing gore are targeted at males at a young or middle age as females, young males, and older males are not normally associated with films containing gore. This is shown in films such as 'Wolf Creek' that contains gore and has two strong females character, and yet the target audience is still males aged 30-44.

Overall, most horror film makers are making there films for the same audience due to males aged 18-44 being the biggest fans of horror films. This may however be a bad thing because if all horror film makers target the same audience then films may start to become repetitive.
