5.1 Audience 30 minute timed exam question.

For this essay I have used the trailer for insidious in order to see how the audience reacts to the trailer.

Firstly, for the trailer we can apply the hypodermic needle theory. The hypodermic needle theory is the way in which the mass media injects thoughts, values, and beliefs into the audience, which can almost be done through some form of propaganda.. We can see that the subtext of the film is child abuse. If the audience sees the film from the passive perspective of the hypodermic needle theory then they may see how from what they've been taught from the mass media that child abuse is bad and then act upon this by acting upon what they saw.

Secondly, we can also apply the uses and gratifications theory to the trailer. The first way in which the theory can be applied to the trailer is in the way that people watch the film for there own needs. Part of the active theory suggests that the audience watches the film for there own needs such as to get an adrenaline rush. The main reason for this is that what happens in the film rarely happens in real life so people have to watch films in order to try and experience the situation for themselves. This links to the part of the theory that people will watch these types of films when there bored so that they can try to add more excitement into there lives. Also, after watching a film some people will head straight onto a social networking site in order to express there opinions about the film. Then they may decided to become more active and go onto a fan group or chat to there friends about the film. The main reason why people do this is to become part of a large group of people who all experienced the same feelings and share similar thoughts on the film.

Furthermore, we could also apply the copycat theory to the trailer.
----30 minutes----
The way in which the theory takes over a passive audience. For example, in insidious we see the way in which they try to summon the demon. People may act upon this in two different ways. One way is by saying that it's impossible to summon a spirit by taking the more scientific approach. However, some people may take a different approach and try to contact a spirit themselves by using a Ouija board.

"of the active theory suggests that the audience watches the film for there own needs such as to get an adrenaline rush. " - what is in the trailer that would cause this?

What would they retweet about it? Specific content?
